2013-08-02: Leaving St. Johann im Tirol, arriving St. Anton am Arlberg

Oh, so sad - St. Johann is such a great place, leaving is really difficult.  Thankfully, we've heard that St. Anton is also beautiful (it is).

I know I've already forgotten a ton of details about our days here, so it's at least a good thing to record what I *do* remember.  :)

Today, we grabbed a taxi for the trip to the train station and prepped for a few hours on the trains.  I know I say it a lot, but the public transit here is amazing.  So easy!

Maya, in mine and Amy's room the morning of our departure.

We had a LOT of good memories here...

Goodbye Hotel Noichl!  We will see you again.

*sniff*

Maya doesn't realize that Amy can photobomb too :)

Travel - this is what it's all about - being together.  It was Ella's turn to be the pillow.  Being a pillow for your little sister is a very important job :)

Our first transfer was in Innsbruck - quite a large station, so the first objective was to make sure we didn't miss our connection to St. Anton.  Looks like we had about an hour, so we tried to find a place to stash the luggage.  We ended up finding a place, but couldn't fit my massive suitcase, so I opted to keep it with me while we made a run for it (wanted to see a *little* of Innsbruck as long as we're here!).  The last time I was here was around Christmas 1991 visiting Amy.  I remember lots of warm saurkraut stands in Innsbruck - it was heaven!

One other thing - we noticed before leaving the train station that it appeared that our connecting train would be 40 mins late (yay!  more time!).  But when Amy asked the train helpers, there were like "NO, the train will be on time".  "But the sign says..."  "No matter - the train will be on time".

So we rushed around Innsbruck to see the Golden Roof (saw it!) and quick rushed back to not miss our connection.  That ended up being 50 mins late.

Doh.

Wish they wouldn't have done that - so we grabbed a quick bite of McDonald's before going to the platform to wait for the train that will take us to our next destination.  First McDonald's in about a year - nice place to visit, but wouldn't want be there too often, IYKWIM.

You can't tell, but I have a 60 lb suitcase and I'm trying to keep up with them on a mission to see the Golden Roof of Innsbruck.

Mission accomplished!  Not as close as we'd like, but we'd also like to NOT miss our connection to St. Anton.

St. Anton is a gorgeous mountain village.  And for as steep and scenic as St. Johann was, St. Anton is even STEEPER (and just as scenic).  At least in St. Johann, there was a valley with the town, it seemed that St. Anton ONLY had uphill and downhill.  Very steep, not much of a "platform" down in the valley.  You can tell this is even more of a huge downhill ski town in the winter.  I bet it's crazy...

Alkira!  Great place in St. Anton!

On our hike, there were sections of the trail that were so reflective, it looked like we were off to see The Wizard.  The pic isn't great, but there were sections of 50 feet or so where this was the predominant rock (sort of like a mica?) where the dust had all rubbed off and gave the trail a shiny, smooth appearance.  Super cool.

Groestl.  ME GUSTA.

Tomorrow there is a stage of the Austrian Giro (?) - a criterium stage through the town, and then a road race the next day.  Here Ella is making sure she has her poses down for the big award ceremony.

Having "Safety Car" on this beast is the very definition of ironic.  Such a kickass machine.

This has been here for a LONG time.
Excited for the next section of epic adventures!  More soon.
