2013-07-18: Swimming at Schafbergbad

Holy crap, we've found our new favorite swimming complex.  Right at the end of the 42A bus line, picks us up from Hernals 2 blocks from our house, drops us off at the pool up on the hill.

This place is awesome - lots of different pools, tons of places to hang out with your family, cafes, etc.  They have two diving boards and a 15 foot deep end.  Maya and I have been known to spend close to two hours in the deep end, mostly diving and "hanging out near the bottom". I very likely spent an hour underwater, most of it being about 45-60 seconds at a time.  Maya and I would let out air until we sank to the bottom.  IT'S DEEP.  But it's scary peaceful down there - the silhouettes of the people floating so far above you, (mostly) unaware that you're even down there.  Total zen.

The water is actually really cold (!) but so nice on a hot day.  One thing that we've noticed is just how UNshy this population of supposedly-reserved Austrians are  :)  Man, get them in the pool and it's like one big make out.  This applies to young kids (12?  ewww!) as well as not-so-young kids (50+  ewww!).  Not sure which was grosser - although having the parents just all over each other with the kids trying to ask them questions and stuff...  Yeah, it was pretty jarring :)

Here's the deal - I love the whole love thing, but GOING AT IT five feet from me in a public pool and all I wanna do is rinse off with some strong soap and isopropyl.

Not a lot of pictures of the place (nor of the PDAs, nor of the people trying to make sure they don't have any unsightly tan lines, IYKWIM), but you'll have to trust me.  And in spite of the visual and emotional scarring from being foisted into others' very private lives, we had a fantastic time.  A full and quick recovery is expected!

Afterwards, we walked down the Himmelmutterweg ("Heavenly Mother Way"?) - very steep.  Saw a LOT of bikers on their ascent.  Clearly some of them know what they're doing, but I tell you, when I see one of them in granny at the *bottom* of the hill, you gotta think they either have no idea what's coming 2 blocks up (it kicks up drastically) or they plan to walk just after we're out of sight.  I think there was only really one guy that when he passed us we were like "yeah - he'll probably make it".

Great day swimming, then it was home for dinner and another fun night of games!

On our way!

What you can't see here are the incredible pools and semi-naked people (some more than others...) of varying shapes and sizes.

Walking down the Himmelmutterweg - it's steep!  Not Chilkoot, but close.  And about 3x longer.

Just a sweet picture.  Enjoy!
